Steering Committee Meeting
SERA-IEG 20
June 24, 2002
Auburn University Hotel and Dixon Conference Center
Auburn, AL
Welcome
Dr. D. Wayne Reeves, USDA-ARS Nat. Soil Dynamics Lab, Auburn, AL
Introductions
Approval of Minutes of the last meeting (July 9, 2001, Oklahoma City,
Oklahoma)
Last year's Minutes were submitted to Washington, D.C. but were unavailable
at this meeting. They were approved unread.
SERA-IEG 20 Advisors Report
Greg Weideman, the SERA-IEG 20 Administrator, mentioned that the
Project expires in 2004. The group should begin discussions to decide
if we want to apply again. We do not need to take action until next
year, but should be thinking about it.
Upcoming Conferences
Travis Miller and John Matocha presented an invitation to meet next
year (2003) in College Station, Texas. The dates will be June 16-18.
The SCTCSA Steering Committee will meet on June 16. June 17 will feature
an annual field day and some special stops along the way. The academic
portion of the Conference will take place on June 18.
There was much discussion on the need to identify future meeting
sites with more lead time. This was strongly supported by those who
have organized meetings in the past. North Carolina (David Jordan,
North Carolina State Univ., Raleigh, NC and Bobby G. Brock, USDA-NRCS,
Raleigh, NC) is exploring the possibility of hosting the 2004 meetings,
with backup from South Carolina (Phil Bauer and Warren J. Busscher,
USDA-ARS Coastal Plains Res. Ctr., Florence, SC).
Proceedings
Wayne Reeves thanked Edzard van Santen for taking on the task of
editing and publishing this years Proceedings. Authors were encouraged
this year to submit full papers, but interpretive summaries and extended
abstracts were also accepted. The Proceedings were published as hard
copies, in accord with suggestions from recent years' steering committee
suggestions. They were also included on the 25 Years CD and will be
posted on the SCTCSA 2002 web site.
Kirk Iversen was thanked for producing the 25 Years CD, as was Kenya
Lee, who helped with scanning and editing.
Web Site
Past attempts to set up a permanent web site for the Conference have
failed. Randy Raper mentioned that the USDA-NRCS Soil Quality Institute
has volunteered to put the Proceedings from the first 25 years on
their site. Discussion suggested we explore using the SQI site as
a permanent site to provide continuity for the Conference.
Southern Conservation Tillage Conference Service Award
Normie Buehring discussed the development of the award and the committee
structure. The award was started by Terry Keisling; the committee
currently consists of Normie Buehring, John Hodges III, and Ray Gallaher.
They are looking for more members. John Matocha and Phil Bauer volunteered
to join the committee and were appointed. Normie reiterated (with
accord and discussion from others) that the focus of the award is
to honor person's who have contributed specifically to the SCTCSA
conferences, not generic to conservation tillage accomplishments.
There were six nominees submitted this year, the highest ever. The
committee is hoping for even more in the future.
Other Business
There was discussion about using English units vs. metric units in
the Proceedings. The consensus was that the Conference was intended
to include participation by farmers and others more comfortable with
traditional units; so English units would be appropriate in most cases.
The meeting agreed, however, that there are a number of disciplines
in which metric units are more appropriate. Authors and editors should
use common sense to decide which units are applicable.
