2002 Annual Report

Project/Activity Number: SERA-IEG-20
Project/Activity Title: Southern Conservation Tillage Conference for Sustainable Agriculture
Period Covered: January, 2002 through December, 2002
Annual Meeting Date(s): June 24 to 26, 2002

Participants: A list of participants is available on this year’s Conference web site: http://www.ag.auburn.edu/nsdl/sctcsa/sctcsa_2002/participants.html.

Minutes: The Conference Program is available on this year’s Conference web site: http://www.ag.auburn.edu/nsdl/sctcsa/sctcsa_2002/program.html.

The Minutes of the Steering Committee meeting are available on this year’s Conference web site: http://www.ag.auburn.edu/nsdl/sctcsa/sctcsa_2002/minutes.html.

Accomplishments and Impacts: The primary mission of SERA-IEG-20 is to provide a medium for exchanging information about conservation tillage and related technology between and among researchers, extension personnel, NRCS personnel, crop consultants, agrochemical companies and farmers. This year’s Conference sought to accomplish this with one day of scientific presentations followed by a Conservation Tillage Field Day, which focused on practical field and equipment demonstrations.

About 270 participants from 13 states and 6 countries, representing all of the above target groups, attended the Conference in Auburn, AL. Twenty-three oral and 59 poster presentations facilitated exchange of information and ideas. The Conference Proceedings included 80 papers, grouped into seven categories:

  • Past, Present, and Future of Conservation Tillage Systems (12 papers);
  • Sod-Based Systems (7 papers);
  • Nutrient Management (8 papers);
  • Pest Management (8 papers);
  • Soil Quality (20 papers);
  • Cover Crops and High Residue Systems (7 papers);
  • Development of Management Systems (18 papers).

The Conservation Tillage Field Day included 28 practical demonstrations by researchers, extension, NRCS, and industry personnel, and farmers. The demonstrations were grouped into five (four riding and one walking) tours. Attendance for the Field Day was about 500, which included most of the Conference participants as well as many farmers and field personnel from Alabama and neighboring states.

As this year marked the 25th anniversary of the Conference, proceedings from all of the annual meetings were collected, digitized (only three previous years were available in computer-format), and edited as PDF files. (There were no published proceedings for 1979). The collection was published on CD ROM and distributed to all Conference participants. It is also available through this year’s Conference web site: http://www.ag.auburn.edu/nsdl/sctcsa/sctcsa_2002/proceedings.html. We hope this project makes the information from all of the annual meetings, which is still very relevant, more widely available.

We are exploring the possibility of establishing a permanent web site for the Conference. This may be jointly sponsored by Auburn University, USDA-ARS, and USDA-NRCS Soil Quality Institute.

Next year’s meeting will be June 16-18, 2003, in College Station, TX.
