2004 Annual Report

Project/Activity Title: Southern Conservation Tillage Conference for Sustainable Agriculture

Summary:

The meeting was held June 8-9, 2004 at the Jane S. McKimmon Center located in Raleigh North Carolina. Lane Price was the featured speaker discussing conservation success stories in North Carolina. Lane’s presentation was followed by a series of oral presentations by North Carolina Cooperative Extension Agents from five distinctly different regions of North Carolina. These presentations included an overall background on conservation tillage systems in those regions along with successes and failures growers had observed. Several growers also participated in the section. Three papers were presented related to nutrient management followed by five papers associated with soil properties and conservation tillage. Seven papers were presented on conservation tillage production systems with four related to pest management in conservation tillage systems. A total of 21 posters were included in the program. The following categories and number of papers in the Proceedings were compiled at the 2004 meeting.

Conservation Tillage Production Systems – 21
Pest Management in Conservation Tillage – 10

A total of 3.5 hours of CCA credits were offered in the categories of Soil and Water Management and Crop Management. One credit hour was offered for Pest Management.

The awards luncheon was held June 8. Dr. Normie Buehring presented SCTCSA Service awards to Drs. Wayne Reeves and Joe Touchton for their service to SERA-IEG 20 over the many years since its inception. Dr. David Monks made a few humorous comments as Master of Ceremonies following the awards presentation.

Fifty-five paid registrations were collected with an additional 10 waived (Cooperative Extension Agents and farmers making presentations). A total of seven sponsors made financial commitments to support the meeting.
