Steering Committee Meeting
SERA-IEG 20
June 27, 2005
Pee Dee Research and Education Center
Florence, South Carolina
Phil Bauer, Chair of the 2005 conference called the meeting to
order at 7:30p. He reported on the state of the 2005 meeting. The meeting
had 24 oral and 32 poster presentations with about 100 people pre-registered
and another 40 to 50 people expected to walk in. In addition, a $15
meeting registration was available for those wishing to attend only
the field tour; this registration was advertised by the farm bureau;
they sent out 500 letters to producers.
David Jordan, Chair of the 2004
conference, renewed the project (SERA-IEG 20) under which the meeting
is held. The renewal was sent to the project’s
administrator Greg Weidemann, (Gregory J. Weidemann, Dean and Associate
Vice President for Research, Phone: 479-575-2034 Fax: 479-575-7273
gweidema@uark.edu).
The future of the group was discussed with several
suggestions, including the following: 1. Merging our group with a precision
agriculture group
that recently disbanded. They contributed 5 posters and 5 oral presentations
to this year’s meeting. 2. Meeting with other groups to instill
new ideas. Such groups include Southern ASA or APRES - the American
Peanut Research and Education Society; David Jordan will check on the
APRES meeting site in 2008. 3. Meet at a location that is more conducive
to family activities. 4. Drop tillage from our name to be more open
to other groups and concentrate on Conservation Management Systems
or Conservation Technology Management Systems but still focus on Agriculture.
Information on the future of the group will be taken up by an executive
committee made up of the chairs of the meeting this year and for the
next two years (Phil Bauer bauer@florence.ars.usda.gov, Louis Baumhardt
rlbaumhardt@cprl.ars.usda.gov, and David Wright dlw@ifas.ufl.edu).
The
idea of meeting every two years was not supported.
