Steering Committee Meeting
SERA-IEG 20
June 26, 2006
Fifth Seasons Inn
Amarillo, Texas
Louis Baumhardt, Chair of the 2006 Conference called the meeting together
at 6:00 pm. He passed out the agenda for the committee meeting
and the previous meeting’s minutes. No corrections were
made and they stood approved as read.
An overview of the 2006 conference was presented. Twenty oral,
42 poster presentations, and a moderated producer panel will be part
of the 2006 conference. Approximately 100 people were expected
to attend the conference with an additional 50 expected for Wednesday’s
tour. The distribution of the papers was significantly broad
given the new name which included “Systems”. The
paper distribution was:
- Tillage effects on crops and soil properties – 14
- Irrigation and water use – 12
- Nutrient management – 11
- Integrated livestock, forage, grasses, and cover crops – 14
- Economics and other topics – 11
Much discussion was held concerning the future name of the workgroup
and conference. Normie Buehring made a motion that we adopt the
name “Southern Conservation Systems Conference for Agriculture” and
John Matocha seconded the motion. Additional discussion led Normie
Buehring to modify his suggestion to “Southern Conservation Agricultural
Systems Conference” with Louis Baumhardt seconding the motion. The
motion passed by unanimous consent.
The group then discussed additionally broadening the base of the group
to include the rest of the United States while retaining the name,
geographic location, and members of the steering committee from the
Southern United States. The unanimous recommendation of the group
was to adopt this direction for the group if the project’s administrator
(Greg Weidemann, Dean and Associate Vice President for Research) also
approved.
The location of future meeting was discussed. David Wright will
host the 2007 Conference in Quincy, FL on June 25-27. He also
mentioned that he had discussed jointly meeting with several other
groups including APRES, Southern Pasture and Forage Improvement Conference,
and the Southern ASA meeting. Conflicts with timing prevented
the conference from meeting jointly in 2007.
The potential location of the 2008 meeting was then discussed. Virginia
was selected as a logical candidate for this meeting due to new efforts
being made to broaden the use of conservation technologies. Joel
Faircloth was mentioned as a potential contact. Georgia was also
mentioned as potential location with Alan Franzluebbers agreeing that
they would be glad to step forward and host the 2008 conference if
Virginia could not be arranged. If Virginia was agreeable to
host the 2008 conference, then Georgia would host the 2009 Conference.
Normie Buehring then asked to be relieved as chair of the Awards committee
after the 2007 conference. David Wright nominated Randy Raper
and he accepted. He was elected by unanimous consent. The
other members of the committee include John Matocha, Raymond Gallaher,
Phil Bauer, and John Hodges. Raymond Gallaher is retiring in
the near future and would also like to be replaced.
Normie Buehring then made a motion that a new award be created and
given to influential others that have made significant contributions
to the adoption and use of conservation tillage in the Southern United
States. Normie Buehring, Warren Busscher, and Randy Raper were
asked to form a subcommittee and create the basis of the award that
would be presented to the Conference in 2007 for approval. This
motion was passed by unanimous consent.
Updating the mailing list was next discussed. An effort will
be made to allow interested individuals to sign up for future announcements
at the conference website.
The minutes will be distributed via email prior to the next conference.
John Matocha made a motion to adjourn, David Wright seconded.
The meeting adjourned at 8:00 pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
