AUBURN, Ala. - Claude Carter, a businessman from Daphne; James Earl Mobley, a farmer from Shorterville; and Allen Edgar, a retired professor from Auburn; recently became the 28th, 29th and 30th inductees into Auburn University's Agricultural Alumni Association Hall of Honor, during ceremonies on the AU campus.
Carter, a native of Weogufka and a 1941 Auburn graduate, retired as chief executive officer of ConAgra in 1977. He remained an active member of the company's board of directors until 1992. He is currently president of Carter Investment Company in Daphne.
Mobley is president of the Alabama Peanut Growers Association and is one of four vice-presidents of Alabama Farmers Federation. He and his sons operate Mobley farms, a diversified family farm near Shorterville. Over the years, Mobley's name has become synonymous with peanuts, and he was worked on various state, regional, and national committees to help peanut growers.
Edgar, a native of Kansas, is world renown for his development of several poultry vaccines. His work played a vital role in the development of poultry industry in the Southeast. He joined the Auburn University faculty in 1947, where he remained until his retirement and appointment as professor emeritus in 1987.
Though each of the 1994 inductees comes from a different area of the agricultural industry, they share a common bond of service and commitment to excellence. Throughout their respective careers each of the inductees has consistently strived to give back to agriculture more than they took from it.
Each year since 1985 three distinguished leaders of the state's agricultural industry are elected into membership into the Hall of Honor. Nominations for the award are submitted by Ag Alumni Association members and voted on by the group's board of directors. Among the membership in the Hall of Honor are Goodwin Myrick, president of Alabama Farmers Federation; R.C. "Red" Bamburg; and Dennis Rouse, former dean of Auburn's School of Agriculture and director of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station.
