AUBURN, Ala. - Frank Bartol has been inducted as an honorary member into the Epsilon Chapter of Phi Zeta, the Honor Society of Veterinary Medicine. Elected by the faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine for this award, Bartol is a Professor in Animal and Dairy Sciences at Auburn University.
"It's a great honor to receive nomination to Phi Zeta, and it's very rare for someone without a veterinary medical degree to be inducted," said Dwight Wolfe, head of Large Animal Surgery and Medicine and past president of the Epsilon Chapter of Phi Zeta. The Epsilon Chapter, which was organized at Auburn 50 years ago, is the fifth oldest chapter in the United States and inducts very few honorary members.
To be inducted without a veterinary medical degree, a person must have rendered distinguished service in the advancement of the science relating to the animal industry and particularly animal diseases.
"Dr. Bartol has made significant contributions to education and research in veterinary medicine at Auburn University," said Wolfe. "He has collaborated in joint research projects with almost every department in the College of Veterinary Medicine. He frequently lecturers in veterinary courses, and he teaches animal science courses which graduate students in veterinary medicine take. In addition he presents educational papers, participates in short courses and conducts hands-on labs to help students and veterinarians improve their diagnostic skills."
Known as "Skip" to his students and fellow faculty members, Bartol became interested in uterine biology as an undergraduate student at Virginia Tech. In graduate school he studied uterine factors that affect embryo survival and fetal growth. His current research projects are focused on identification of developmental events that affect the capacity of uterine tissues to support reproduction in large domestic animals, including cattle, pigs and sheep.
Bartol received his B.S. from Virginia Tech and his M..S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Florida. He has been a faculty member of the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences since 1983.
