Bransby Named Fellow in American Society of Agronomy

AUBURN, Ala. - David I. Bransby, alumni professor in the Auburn University Department of Agronomy and Soils, has been named a fellow in the American Society of Agronomy.

Bransby, who grew up on a small dairy farm in Port Shepstone, South Africa, earned his B.S. degree in grassland science from the University of Natal, South Africa, in 1972. While on a Rotary International Graduate Fellowship, he received his M.S. degree in agronomy from the University of Missouri in 1975, then returned to the University of Natal to serve as an assistant professor. In 1978, he earned a M.S. in market research and advertising from the University of South Africa, then went on to earn the Ph.D. in 1983 from the University of Natal in grassland science.

Bransby was promoted to associate professor at the University of Natal, and received the BP Southern Africa Scholarship in Agriculture for further study abroad. He spent 1984 as a visiting scientist at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Tex., then returned to South Africa for a few years. In 1987 he immigrated to the United States to join Auburn's faculty as an associate professor. He was promoted to full professor in 1990 and received an alumni professorship in 1995.

At Auburn, Bransby is involved in teaching and research, as well as outreach activities. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate level course in forage and livestock production, and his research focuses on forage-livestock production and the development of energy crops and bioenergy technologies.

Bransby won the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station Director's Research Award, one of the highest honors bestowed on scientists working with the AAES, and his research has attracted more than $3 million in extramural funding. He is author or co-author of more than 200 scientific papers, book chapters and conference abstract and has served as associate editor of the Journal of Production Agriculture. He also has assisted in the organization of two national symposia on grazing research methodology.
