CROSSVILLE, Ala. - Area cattle producers looking for options for feeding their herds through the upcoming winter months are urged to attend a Beef Cattle Field Day Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Sand Mountain Research and Extension Center in Crossville. The day's events will be held in the center's Beef Nutrition Barn.
The program, which will run from 9 a.m. until noon, will feature presentations on several alternatives for winter feeding of brood cows, including stockpiling fescue; using soy hulls, wheat bran and other byproducts; stockering weaned calves on byproduct feeds, litter and pastures; using supplemental blocks; and every-day feeding versus skip-day feeding of broiler litter/hay diets.
Program presenters will be Darrell Rankins, associate professor of animal and dairy sciences in Auburn University's College of Agriculture; and Walt Prevatt, Extension economist and professor of agricultural economics and rural sociology.
An update on beef cattle research being conducted at the Sand Mountain Research and Extension Center also will be included in the program.
The field day is free and open to the public. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. A hamburger steak dinner will be served at noon.
Co-sponsors of the event are Faithway Feed in Guntersville and Southern States in Geraldine.
