D&F Foundation Funds AU Scholarship

CROSSVILLE, Ala. —What do golf and poultry have in common?

While they might not seem to be related, the fact is that proceeds from a golf tournament are funding a scholarship for an Auburn University student majoring in poultry science.

The scholarship has been set up by the D&F Foundation, which was created by Larry Fortenberry, owner of D&F Equipment Sales, Inc., in Crossville. D&F Equipment Sales, Inc., manufactures equipment for poultry processing plants, and is an allied member of the Alabama Poultry and Egg Association.

"We appreciate the efforts of Larry Fortenberry and his entire company for putting on a first-class golf tournament and allowing us to reap some of the benefits," noted Luther Waters, dean of the College of Agriculture at Auburn University. "We feel we have some of the top students at Auburn, many of whom cannot stay in school without scholarships, and the D&F Foundation scholarship will play a major role in our ability to offer assistance to worthy students majoring in poultry science."

The idea for the foundation came from Larry Fortenberry's participation in fund-raising golf tournaments. "I started going to tournaments a few years ago," he said. "I realized this was the single biggest way for getting a lot of money in one lick."

During the spring of 1999, Fortenberry decided to hold his own golf tournament and create a foundation to help people. The tournament became a reality in just a few months and was held in August 1999.

Fortenberry thinks the foundation is a means of paying back the good fortune he's gotten in life. "It's a way of not forgetting where I came from," he said..

Plans are underway for the D&F Foundation 2nd Annual Golf Classic tournament to be held again at Silver Lake, a Robert Trent Jones course, located in Glencoe, Ala.

For more information on D&F Foundation or the golf tournament call 1-800-282-7842 or contact David Cline, D&F Foundation, P.O. Box 275, Crossville, AL 35962.

Proceeds from the D&F Foundation's golf tournaments will be used for two purposes: to assist families in Alabama with medical expenses not covered by insurance and to fund a scholarship for students majoring in poultry science at Auburn University.
