AUBURN, Ala.—Research projects aimed toward keeping the grounds of Alabama golf courses and athletic fields lush and green will be on tour during the Auburn University Turfgrass Field Day, scheduled for Friday, July 21, at the AU Turfgrass Research Unit.
Field tours, which will run from 8 a.m. until lunch, will give participants a first-hand look at the latest research into such areas as the biology and control of annual bluegrass and nontuberous sedge, control of Virginia buttonweed, chemical methods for the removal of overseeds and alternative fumigants to methyl bromide. Other projects up for view involve research into the cooling of bentgrass putting greens, phosphorus management for bentgrass putting greens, the NTEP bentgrass varieties putting green evaluation, inorganic amendments for bermudagrass putting greens, and N source effects on the ultradwarf bermudagrasses.
Participants also will hear an update on fire ant management and will be introduced to the Distance Disease Diagnostic Center. The latest in turf maintenance equipment and products will be on display from 7 a.m. through 2 p.m.
Cost of attending the field day is $15 for those registering by July 10 and $20 for those who register the day of the event. On-site registration begins at 7 a.m. Registration, which includes lunch, is by cash or personal check only. Credit card registration is not available.
The AU Turfgrass Field Day is being co-hosted by the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station; the Alabama Cooperative Extension System; AU's College of Agriculture and its departments of Agronomy and Soils, Entomology and Plant Pathology, Horticulture, and Biosystems Engineering; the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation; the Alabama Turfgrass Association; and the Beck Turfgrass Endowment.
