Field Day at Wiregrass Research Center Will Feature Peanut, Cotton Tours

HEADLAND, Ala.—South Alabama peanut growers and cotton farmers can learn the results of the latest crop production research on Tuesday, Aug. 22, during the Field Crops Field Day at the Wiregrass Research and Extension Center in Headland.

The event will feature two field tours, which participants will take between 8:45 a.m. and noon. Registration for the field day begins at 8 a.m.

The peanut research featured on the tours will focus on studies involving peanut varieties, row spacings and tillage systems, as well as insect and disease control. One of the tours will include a presentation on computer-driven weed management for peanuts.

On the cotton front, participants will see and hear about research into subsurface irrigation; BXN versus Roundup-Ready weed control systems; row spacing, planting date and seeding rates; and the use of broiler litter and commercial fertilizers in strip-till fields.

The field day, which will conclude with a sponsored lunch at noon, is open to all persons regardless of race, color, sex or national origin.
