Clarence Johnson Named Ag Engineering Fellow

AUBURN, Ala.—Clarence Johnson, professor emeritus of the Department of Biosystems Engineering at Auburn University (AU), recently was named a fellow in the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE).

Johnson was honored by ASAE for his superior contributions to agricultural engineering, knowledge of soil dynamics, excellence in teaching and leadership contributions to ASAE. He taught professional engineering courses at Iowa State University, South Dakota State University and Auburn University for more than 35 years until his retirement in 1988. Along with colleagues at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Soil Dynamics Laboratory in Auburn, Johnson gained worldwide respect for pioneering research in soil dynamics.

He made major contributions to agricultural engineering through his distinguished record in tillage and traction machinery research and in teaching agricultural engineering and engineering mechanics courses. His awards and honors include being named to numerous "Who's Who" listings, four Outstanding Engineering Faculty Teaching awards from Auburn and two ASAE paper awards.

An active member of ASAE for more than 30 years, Johnson has served in leadership positions within the Society on numerous Power and Machinery division committees and in the Society's North Central region and Alabama section. He also is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers and Alabama Society of Professional Engineers. He earned his degrees from Oklahoma State University and Iowa State University.

The American Society of Agricultural Engineers is a 9,000-member professional and technical organization dedicated to the advancement of engineering applicable to agricultural, food and biological systems.

To be considered as a candidate for ASAE fellow, a nominee must demonstrate unusual professional distinction, with outstanding qualifications and experience in the field of agricultural engineering. Other requirements include 20 years or more in the profession or teaching of engineering and 20 or more as and ASAE member. Only about two percent of the active ASAE members are eligible to be a fellow.
