AUBURN, Ala. — The possibilities for sequestering carbon dioxide (CO2) and other so-called greenhouse gases in the soil, underground or in the oceans and thus alleviating the gases’ climate-changing effects will be the topic of discussion during a Weaver Lecture Series presentation Dec.1 in Auburn.
Sandra Brown, a senior scientist with Arkansas-based Winrock International, will deliver the lecture, entitled “Carbon Sequestration in the United States for Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions.” In the presentation, Brown will look at numerous carbon sequestration activities under way in the federal, state and private sectors. She also will address the issue of how carbon credits may be sold by landowners and the potential price for these credits.
Brown has an international reputation as a leader in the field of forests and their relationship to climate change and mitigation. She has more than 20 years’ experience estimating and modeling the carbon cycle in forests and the environmental and human factors that influence that cycle. She joined the Ecosystems Services Unit of Winrock International in 1998 and was previously a professor of forestry at the University of Illinois in Chicago-Urbana. Winrock is a nonprofit agricultural development organization that works with people in more than 40 countries to increase economic opportunity, sustain natural resources and protect the environment.
The Weaver Lecture presentation is set for 3 p.m. in Seminar Room 1 of the AU Dixon Conference Center in Auburn. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the AU School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences and is made possible by an endowment from Earl H. and Sandra H. Weaver of Brewton, long-time supporters of Auburn and forestry.
