A day-long Alabama Cotton Field Day is planned for the Tennessee Valley Research and Extension Center in Belle Mina Thursday, Aug. 4, beginning at 7:30 a.m.
The meeting will feature three different tours of the TVREC on various cotton production topics. One tour will cover weed and insect control, drip irrigation and cover crop desiccation practices. A second tour will focus on cotton fertility, Monsanto flex cotton varieties, cover crop management for weed suppression and narrow-row (15-inch rows) cotton production. The third will feature information on variable rate seeding, variable rate nitrogen, variable rate spraying, yield mapping and cotton disease and nematode control.
Chet Norris, TVREC superintendent, said participants will have the opportunity to go on all three tours.
Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. The program will continue at 1:15 p.m. with an update from the AAES director's office and, at 1:30 p.m., a demonstration of John Deere Autotrac tractors.
Cosponsors of the field day include the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station, the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, John Deere Company and Southeast Farm Press publication.
The Tennessee Valley Research and Extension Center is one of six research and extension centers in the state supported by the AAES and Extension.
All persons, regardless of race, religion, gender, age, or national origin, are invited to attend the field day.
