Satsuma Workshop, Field Day Set in Fairhope

Current and prospective satsuma mandarin growers can glean valuable production and marketing pointers Thursday, Nov. 3, during a Satsuma Workshop and Field Day to be held at the Gulf Coast Research and Extension Center in Fairhope.

Registration, which is free to the public, opens at 8 a.m. The jam-packed morning of activities gets under way at 8:30, with sessions covering the market potential of satsuma mandarins, Alabama 's well-established farm-to-school satsuma program and a prospective venture involving direct marketing of Alabama-grown satsumas through the home shopping channel, QVC.

The production segment of the workshop will open with sessions on integrated pest management strategies for insects and disease. Participants then will be treated to an orchard tour, where they can get a firsthand look at young tree culture and satsuma varieties, hear the latest on freeze protection and enjoy an in-the-orchard fruit-tasting session.

Activities will wrap up at noon.

The workshop and field day, open to all persons regardless of gender, race, religion or national origin, is co-sponsored by the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.
