ON WORLD HUNGER — Catherine Bertini, former executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme and recipient of the 2003 World Food Prize, visits with AU College of Agriculture Dean Richard Guthrie, center, and retired AU agronomy and soils professor Leonard Ensminger during a reception honoring Bertini as the fall 2006 E.T. York Distinguished Lecturer.
In the public lecture following the reception, Bertini outlined to a packed auditorium three humanitarian food aid programs that were carried out under her watch at the WFP—including efforts in South Africa, North Korea and Afghanistan—and how those programs were successful not only in saving lives but also in contributing to positive change in the political nature of those regions. But while the WFP is credited with saving hundreds of millions of starving people globally, the international war on hunger truly begins on a much smaller scale, Bertini said, adding, “Those examples of what can be done by a large agency pale in comparison to what can be done by one individual to convince the public that hunger still exists.”
She pointed to the AU/WFP partnership that features Auburn’s student-led War on Hunger and the profound impact that students banning together can have on alleviating world hunger. The WFP selected Auburn University in the fall of 2004 as its lead partner to establish a comprehensive model for a nationwide “war on hunger” campaign spearheaded by university students.
