Workshop to Hone Teens' Scholarship Application Skills

A dynamic workshop designed to give high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors a distinct advantage in landing all-important college scholarships will be held Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Room 207 of Comer Hall on the campus of Auburn University.

The workshop, “Resume, Scholarship and Leadership Development,” is sponsored by the AU College of Agriculture’s Praxis leadership development program, in conjunction with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the Lee County Teen Leader Club.

“As college tuition costs continue to soar, more and more high school students and their parents are realizing that scholarships are crucial to getting a college education,” said AU animal scientist Don Mulvaney, workshop organizer and coordinator of the College of Agriculture’s agricultural leadership studies (CALS) minor and Praxis Leadership Emphasis.

The workshop will provide a valuable link to those scholarships, Matthew Collins, student trustee of the Leadership Emphasis, said.

“Our goal with this workshop is to equip students with tools and skills that not only will give them an edge in the college scholarship application and interviewing processes but that also will help them become more effective leaders and communicators in college and on throughout life,” the agricultural communications senior said.

Auburn University faculty as well as students in Mulvaney’s advanced leadership development classes at Auburn will be presenting the workshop modules. The workshop is open to any high school student in Alabama. Space may be limited, and reservations will be made on a first-come basis.

The registration fee is $25 by Nov. 2, $45 at the door. The fee includes lunch and all workshop materials. For more information, contact Mulvaney at mulvadr@auburn.edu or Collins, collimd@auburn.edu.
