College of Ag's 2005 Workhorse Award Recipients

WORKHORSES—Harold Johnson, left, of Elmore County and K. Galen Grace of Auburn were recipients of the College of Agriculture’s 2005 Workhorse Award, an honor that is given annually to college alumni or friends who have demonstrated outstanding service to and support for the college. Johnson, a retired mechanic, is a quiet Japanese maple guru who willingly shares his knowledge and expertise with AU horticulture professors, researchers and students as well as master gardeners and industry professionals. Horticulture professor Ken Tilt, who nominated Johnson for the award, calls him “the Johnny Appleseed of Japanese maples.” In nominating Grace, meanwhile, Poultry Science Department Head Don Conner said he knows of no stronger supporter of the college and poultry science. Conner said Grace regularly helps establish and fund new scholarships, recruit new students into the department and the college, helps students find jobs, assists Extension specialists and researchers with their program and is extremely instrumental in establishing links between the poultry industry and AU’s poultry science department. Grace, a 1973 College of Ag alum, works as territory manager for IVS-Wynco Animal Health Inc. Both Johnson and Grace received a plaque along with a special brick that will be placed in their honor at Ag Heritage Park.
