HEADLAND, Ala. —The Wiregrass Research and Extension Center in Headland will hold a cattle and forage field day Thursday, April 5, beginning at 8 a.m.
The field day will include information on the impact of corn prices on Alabama feeder cattle prices and industry updates from the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, USDA’s Natural Resource Conservation Service and Farm Service Agency and the Alabama Farmers Federation’s beef, hay and forage division.
Field tours will show results of research on evaluation of bahiagrass and bermudagrass varieties for yield and quality, evaluation of peanut skins as a cattle feed, integration of cattle into sod-based row-crop rotations, grass-fed beef production, factors affecting grazing cost of gain for grass-finished beef, forage systems nutrition utilization by grass-fed beef cattle and the value of legumes in bermudagrass pastures.
An industry-sponsored lunch at noon will be followed at 1 p.m. by an educational session on the Alabama Beef Quality Assurance certification program.
The field day is open to all persons without regard to race, color, gender, religion or national origin. It is cosponsored by the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.
