A poultry nutrient-management field day will be held Thursday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sand Mountain Research and Extension Center in Crossville.
Participants in the field day will tour research plots and learn the latest developments in nutrient management. Topics to be covered during the morning include poultry litter application on pastures, litter application and timing for field corn production, additional phosphorus needs for optimal blooming of flowers in a high-phosphorus soil, conservation tillage cropping systems and manure management for soybeans and corn, and the use of gypsum to reduce phosphorus runoff from field-applied litter.
Lunch will be served at noon, and the program will continue at 1 p.m. with a session on recordkeeping for broiler litter management and another session on the current and future research needs in broiler litter management for the Sand Mountain region. The field day will conclude with a question-and-answer session.
Among the program participants are Sand Mountain Research and Extension Center superintendent Tony Dawkins, Alabama Cooperative Extension System regional animal waste specialist Joyce Tredaway Ducar and Auburn University faculty members Frank Owsley and John Fulton.
The event is free and open to all persons regardless of race, religion, gender, color or national origin. Pre-registration is requested, and the first 100 participants to register for the field day will receive a free copy of the Environmental Stewardship in Broiler Production Handbook. For more information on the field day, call 256-528-7133 or visit www.aces.edu.
The field day is co-sponsored by the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station and the Extension System. The Sand Mountain REC is one of 12 Experiment Station research centers located throughout Alabama.
