AUBURN, Ala. — The fourth annual State of Our Watershed Conference for the Tallapoosa River Basin will be held Friday, April 11, on the campus of Central Alabama Community College in Alexander City.
The meeting is open to anyone interested in learning more about water management in the Tallapoosa Basin and the health of the streams, rivers and lakes that comprise the basin.
Cosponsored by the Middle Tallapoosa River Basin Clean Water Partnership, Auburn University Water Resources Center, CACC and Alabama Water Watch, the conference will address a wide range of topics related to water use and conservation within the basin.
Speakers will discuss the implications of Alabama’s historic 2007 drought and the need for more comprehensive water planning, the effort to upgrade Lake Martin to an Outstanding Alabama Water designation and community-based initiatives in water management. The economics and multiple uses of water, Lake Martin Dam relicensing and the role of the Auburn University Water Resources Center in the management of the Tallapoosa River Basin also will be addressed.
Registration for the event begins at 8:30 a.m. at CACC’s W. Byron Causey Health Education and Arts Auditorium. The conference gets under way at 9 a.m.
State Rep. Betty Carol Graham, D-Alex City, will be the keynote speaker. Other speakers will include representatives of Auburn University, the Alabama departments of Environmental Management and Economic and Community Affairs, Alabama Power Company and various other agencies and community groups involved in water issues.
Although the meeting is free, registration is required, with a deadline of April 4. Participants may register online at www.twp.auburn.edu.
