AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn University animal sciences associate professor Chris Kerth has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar Grant to spend a total of three of the next 12 months in Uruguay, presenting lectures and seminars and conducting research at the country's National Agricultural Research Institute in Tacuarembó.
Kerth will travel to Uruguay in late summer and again in late winter for two six-week stays. At Auburn, Kerth's research focuses largely on grass-fed beef, a product that is among Uruguay's top agricultural commodities. He said his presentations in the host country likely will highlight his research in the areas of sensory analyses of and consumer attitudes toward grass-fed beef, as well as processing methods and product safety.
The most rewarding aspects of the experience, however, will be his opportunity to interact closely and exchange information and ideaswith Uruguayan meat scientists and to study their research programs, Kerth said.
He will be one of 800 U.S. faculty and professionals the Fulbright Scholar Program will send abroad this year to lecture and research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. While in Uruguay, Kerth plans to continue to teach his graduate-level meat sciences course at AU via video conferencing.
