Auburn University To Host Beef Conference Aug. 16-17

AUBURN, Ala.—The Auburn University Department of Animal Sciences will host its 2013 Beef Cattle Conference in Auburn Friday-Saturday, Aug. 16-17, at the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Overton/Goodwin Student Center and other campus facilities.

The conference, organized by animal sciences faculty and representatives of the Alabama beef cattle community, will follow the theme “Innovation, Efficiency and Effectiveness: Adapting Cattle Production for Greater Success” and will feature a lineup of nationally recognized leaders in the beef industry. The activities will run from 1 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 16, with dinner provided, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Aug. 17.

The speakers and workshops will focus on management skills, nutrition decision making, cattle health and reproduction, markets and marketing and preparing for the future. Guest speakers will include sixth-generation Nebraska farmer Trent Loos, an agricultural activist and radio and media personality; University of Missouri beef cattle efficiency expert Monty Kerley; Wade Shaver, geneticist and executive vice president of the American Simmental Association; and Auburn animal sciences associate professor and beef Extension specialist Lisa Kriese-Anderson.

In addition, the conference will offer a young cattlemen’s track, a preconference tour option, 12 breakout/workshop sessions and interactive workshop sessions for students in grades nine through 12.

The conference comes at a time when cattle producers face major challenges brought on by expanding global demand, a contracted national cow herd and rising input costs, said Don Mulvaney, Auburn animal sciences associate professor and conference planning committee chair.

“The conference is designed to provide members of the beef cattle community an update on current beef cattle topics critical to success, as well as management skills for their farm or ranch that can improve the bottom line,” Mulvaney said. “It will be an outstanding experience for all members of the cattle community.”

Registration is $80 through July 16 and $180 after that. The registration form is available online at https://tpg.auburn.edu/ustores/web/store_cat.jsp?STOREID=4&CATID=13.  For more on the conference or corporate partnership opportunities, contact Candi at 334-844-1521 or visit www.ag.auburn.edu/ansc/ for updates.
